History
The Globe was conceived by Sam Wanamaker, who spent over two decades fundraising for the project. Sadly, he did not live to see the building open.
From the Globe’s website: ‘The Globe Theatre you see today in London is the third Globe. The first opened in 1599 and was built by the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, the company that William Shakespeare wrote for and part-owned.’ The current Globe is situated some metres from the original Globe site, on which Victorian apartments now stand.
