Shakespeare Tercentenary Tree, Kendal Green, Cumbria, UK
- Constructed: 1864
Tree with plaque, planted on the Kendal Green in Kendal, Cumbria, to commemorate Shakespeare’s tercentenary.
Written on the plaque: ‘Shakespeare’s Oak: The oak tree opposite commemorates the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. It was planted in 1864 on Low Tenter Fell where, for centuries, cloth made locally had been dried on tenter-frames. Three bands accompanied a procession of some 5000 townsfolk to witness six-year-old John Wakefield planting the tree. A placard was then held up bearing the words ‘Kendal Green,’ a reference to a staple Kendal cloth immortalised by Shakespeare in Henry IV, Part 1. From that day, the Mayor said, the place where they stood would be so named. Donated by Kendal Green Residents.’
