The statue was moved to Lincoln Park after being displayed in the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, 1893.
The inscription on the statue reads: ‘William Shakespeare What a piece of work is a man — How Noble in reason — How excellent in faculty’
‘The bequest of Samuel Johnson.’
‘William Shakespeare Monument Adopted and endowed by the Edelstein & Pritzker Foundations Under the auspices of Friends of Lincoln Park & The Chicago Park District Oct ’89.’
