Shakespeare Bench, Edmond, Oklahoma, USA
- Constructed: 2004
Bench dedicated to William Shakespeare, found at the University of Central Oklahoma, USA.
From the Art around OKC website: ‘On the front side, a relaxed William is sitting on the side of the bench, with right arm draped over the back of the bench. His right arm rests by a tiny sculpture of two cherubs with a ball between them. On the bench, next to William, is a skull, feather pen, and a bottle of ink. The bottom of the bench leg is a claw, and above it is an artistic W. On top of the bench, directly above the leg, is a small lion’s head with a crown around it.’
‘There are numerous little surprises on this bench, on both sides, so look carefully. At the back of the bench you will find three small figures: a woman in a dress peeking at something; a boy sitting down with legs outstretched, reading a book; a young person sitting up curled with I think a bird on his knee.’
‘Also at the back of the bench is a large decorative plaque with a quote from one of Shakespeare’s works, and a mini Shakespeare biography from the sculptor, Gary Price.’
