History
The statue was commissioned by John Boydell, and was completed in 1789. It originally stood at the entrance to the Boydell Gallery, and was moved to Stratford in 1870.
The inscription on the statue reads: ‘He was a man, take him for all in all;/ I shall not look upon his like again.’
