The plaque reads: ‘’Here stood the Globe Playhouse of Shakespeare, 1598-1613. Wm Martin MA, LLD, FSA – designer, Ed. Lanteri -S. Commemorated by the Shakespeare Reading Society and by subscribers in the United Kingdom and India.’
The plaque was commissioned by Herbert Beerbohm Tree, who unveiled it in his role as President of the Shakespeare Reading Society.
While contemporary press disputed the site of the original Globe, the plaque erectors were vindicated in 1989, when foundations of the original theatre were found in a car park.
