New Place, Stratford-upon-Avon, UK
- Constructed: 1480
Commemorative garden occupying the space where Shakespeare’s final home once stood, in Stratford-upon-Avon.
New Place was a medieval house built by Hugh Clopton in Chapel Street, Stratford upon Avon. When Shakespeare had amassed sufficient wealth, he purchased the property, in 1597.
From 2010-2015, an archaeological dig on the site led by Staffordshire University for The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, revealed further information: Shakespeare made extensive alterations to the building’s frontage, and added a gallery to the house.
New Place was finally demolished in 1759 by the Reverend Francis Gastrell. Following the archaeological dig, a commemorative garden was established on the site, under the auspices of the Trust.
