The memorial was commissioned by Queen Victoria.
Shakespeare can be found among figures on the south face of the ‘Frieze of Parnassus’ around the base of the memorial. The other poets included are: Corneille, Molière, Cervantes, Virgil, Dante, Pythagoras, Homer, Chaucer, Milton, Goethe and Schiller.
