On a plaque by the bust: ‘Whose excellent genius opened to him the whole heart of all the mines of fancy, all the stores of nature and gave him powers beyond all other writers to move, astonish and delight mankind.’
The other worthies are: Isaac Newton, Walter Raleigh, John Locke, John Hampden, Francis Drake, King William III, Queen Elizabeth I, Edward ‘The Black Prince’, King Alfred, Francis Bacon, John Milton, Alexander Pope, Sir Thomas Gresham, Inigo Jones, and Sir John Barnard.
